LA FIRES + RESOURCES

Writer's picture: Lucie AyresLucie Ayres

Ours hearts are broken and our nerves frayed. But we are safe. Our friends, clients, and their loved ones are safe. I know that together, we will get through this.

The devastation is real. Some of the iconic neighborhoods that made us fall in love with LA are gone. When the rebuilding starts, it will be on a scale that's hard to imagine.

Despite what's happened, and what's ahead of us, I'm certain our city will come back stronger and more resilient than ever. The amount of outreach and care displayed over the past few days has been overwhelming. People are stepping up everywhere. The firefighters are absolute heroes. Watching them put their lives at risk to contain the fires, from the ground and from the air, has been awe-inspiring. As Seth Meyers said, they should never have to pay for a beer or a matcha smoothie again.

It's tough reflecting on this personally. From the first home I designed - an historic craftsman in Altadena - to the stunning, architecturally-significant beach house we were just about to complete in Malibu (the artwork is still at the framer's getting framed), so much has been lost. Like all Angelenos, I am still very shaken. A close friend who lost his home said to me, "It's just stuff, it's the people who matter," and of course that's true. But so much thought, effort and love goes into all of our projects, it's only natural to grieve at a time like this. In the spirit of Marie Kondo, we should honor those places, thank them for sparking joy and giving us so many beautiful memories.

In an effort to be helpful, below is a short list of resources. Please reach out if we can help you in any way.

Our curated resource list so far / we are adding to and will update:

  • Recommended attorney: Jack Weaver - jack@weltyweaver.com. His resource guide here as well as sign ups for community seminars.

  • Real estate agents: for East Side Tori Horowitz of CanyonHaus (follow Tori on instagram for updated lease listings) and for West Side Amanda Robertson.

  • Excellent general list of local resources compiled by the LA TIMES.

  • CHECKLIST spreadsheet of documents and things you should have ready if you need to evacuate. Make a copy and modify as needed.

Furniture and home good donations:

  • 22 Interiors along with a handful of other designers are collecting and organizing furnishings for people who lost homes. If you have anything to donate, please email me to coordinate.

Office space:

  • Our offices are in Studio City...we have some extra space. If you need a place to work please reach out.

Smoke damage to furnishings, art, clothing

About the smoke in your home or office - we are organizing best practices and will be back soon with what we've researched; including who to call locally to help clean and save. I know upholstery and wood specifically need to be assessed before determining whether they are safe to keep. Doing some legwork on art and restoration as well. Hoping to create a resource guide on that in the next few days.

Anything you may need, do not hesitate to reach out. Sending everyone a big hug and lots of love.
